Gold Coast Shipping Co. Building |
Remember
the Vice? The site of the groundbreaking television series that defined
a decade is now re-envisioned as Latitude on the River. The classic
Art Moderne building, a former World War II shipyard, where PT boats
were built during World War II, was host to Miami Vice’s OCB
(Organized Crime Bureau), the fictional Police Headquarters with the
undercover name, “Gold Coast Shipping.”
E.A. Fish Development Company will rebuild the structure on the corner
of the 2.2 acre property as a featured landmark visible from both
land and water. "Our project on the Miami River is an important
component of the new vision for the riverfront - a place where people
will live, work, dine and stroll along the river's multi million dollar
promenade." |
| History
of the Landmark Site |
| The
parcel formerly owned by Miami founding family, Marjorie O. Brickell
and William O. Brickell of the Brickell Family Trust, descendents
of city founders William and Mary Brickell, will house the glittering
new Arquitectonica-designed residences and office tower. The Art Moderne
details decorating the 63 year old Gold Coast Shipping Company Building
will be uncovered and prominently featured. The large relief panel
above the building entrance shows a man holding a ship aloft while
kneeling in water and surrounded by a ship's helm, propeller and gear.
The site was the former home to the Miami Shipbuilding Corp. The ship
manufacturer put up the one-story, Art Moderne building in 1940, after
winning a contract to build ships designed to rescue downed pilots
during World War II. As WWII PT boats were built at the site, the
development team plans to erect an historical marker on the Riverwalk. |
